In The Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful

In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful All praise and thanks belongs to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon the most Noble of the Messengers(SAWS). To my beloved brethren and to His Excellence (President Moktar wuld Daddah?), As-Salaamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh!

I wish to express my extreme gratitude to the people/nation of Mauritania and its leaders and government for my hospitable reception--all for the love of the Essence of Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He!, and His Deen.

There is no doubt that this is a country of Muslims, as is witnessed from its leaders, government and people! So again we are thankful for the honorable welcome which has been shown to us by the President, members of the government and the people of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.

There is no doubt that a Muslim is the brother/sister of his fellow Muslim and that they form a single hand. The Muslims are likened unto a single cemented structure, or like a single body! It is no wonder then, that a Muslim should show honor and respect for his Muslim brethren, and I am indebted to you with thanksgiving and admiration.

The people of Mauritania have been coming to visit us (in Medina-Baye, Senegal) with grace and kindness, and today we are coming to honor you and share with you in this dignified occasion of Independence!

I have been praying for you all with Du'a in the particularly honored hours of the night in which Allah answers prayer! For surely, there are times and places on the earth belonging to Allah, in which He will answer supplications made therein. There is a (special) time that each servant has in which Allah will answer his prayer and that time is when the servant isolates himself alone in a private place with Allah Taala!

In truth, there have been times when I have prayed for you in my private and alone times--to the point where I have intended to pray for you before my own parents--except that the Lawgiver has legislated their preeminence--and Allah is Well-Aware of that! This government, which has declared itself an “Islamic Republic” in the 20th century, is sparking a light in this Age and we are thankful for this courageous endowment.

We are very proud of the youth of this century (for doing this) in the face of France, Britain, and America--and all of them are filled with rage on account of this! This is indeed, a very serious matter as far as I am concerned. I ask that His Excellency accept my gratitude and my supplications on behalf of the leaders of the Islamic Republic, for we are a single hand and we are brethren--in this life and the life to come--InshaAllah.

We also are not unmindful of the things we are witnessing in this time of the Jewish (Zionist) aggression and imperialism against our Arab brothers. We ask that Allah Taala support and strengthen the Muslims and the Arabs until the land of Palestine is liberated and that the rights of the people are returned, by the Grace of Allah, Glorious & Exalted is He! We are also sending greetings from the people of Senegal, who are indeed brothers of the Mauritanians!

In fact, these two are not two separate people, but are one single nation!

As-Salaamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh!

ON TAQWA:

All praise and thanks belongs to Allah! There is a cause and reason for every gathering which takes place, and we are companions in the love of Allah (Fi Dhat Allah)-- Glorious & Exalted is He! Therefore, I am advising myself and all of you to have conscious awareness (Taqwa) of Allah--openly and in private--and this is a counsel, which if followed, is a guarantor for the obtainment of everything sought for, in this life and the life to come! Taqwa is the key to the obtainment of everything sought for in this life and the next, outwardly and inwardly! The first thing made obligatory upon a Believer is the acquisition of knowledge and Taqwa is the key to acquiring knowledge. Allah Taala says, Have conscious awareness of Allah and Allah will teach you. And Allah is the Knower of everything!(2:182). So whosoever desires knowledge let him have Taqwa of Allah Taala! Imam ash-Shafi (RA) wrote a poem which contains this meaning: I complained of having a poor memory and I was guided to abandon disobedience. I was told that knowledge is a light, and the Light of Allah is not given to a disobedient person!” Taqwa is to obey the commands and to avoid the prohibitions of Allah, outwardly and inwardly. I also say that Taqwa is to fear abandoning what Allah has made obligatory upon you and to fear doing what Allah has forbidden to you. The righteous person (Taqi) is the one who fears to do what Allah has prohibited or to abandon what He has commanded. Taqwa is the guarantor (Kafil) for the obtainment of everything which is hoped for by the servant of Allah--whether it is Sainthood (Wilaya) or otherwise. Allah says, “No doubt! Verily, the Awliya of Allah--no fear shall come upon them nor shall they grieve. Those who believed and used to be consciously aware of Allah.”(10:62-63). Imam Abu Hanifa (RA) has says in this respect: “If the right acting scholars are not the Friends of Allah, then Allah has no Friends!” Whosoever believes in Allah and obeys the commands and avoids the prohibitions of Allah is among the Friends of Allah--those whom no fear shall come upon, nor shall they grieve! They shall have no grief--either in this life or the next! If the servant of Allah is seeking to receive glad tidings in this life and the next, that is for the Friends of Allah! “For them are glad tidings, in the life of the present world and in the Hereafter. No change can there be in the Word of Allah. This is indeed the supreme success!” (10:64). The Messenger of Allah(SAWS) was questioned about the identity of those described in the verse “…no fear shall come upon them nor shall they grieve.” and he replied, “They are a people coming from various tribes (not related to each other) who meet and gather for the sake of Allah. O people! Listen, understand and know it well. Allah has servants who are neither Prophets nor martyrs and whom the Prophets and martyrs yearn to be like, due to their proximity to the Real. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went on to describe their great reward on the Day of Resurrection: “By Allah, their faces will be luminous and they will be upon light. They will feel no fear when the people will be feeling fear, and they will feel no grief when the people will be grieving.” Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) read the verse: “Behold! Verily on the Friends of Allah there is no fear, nor shall they grieve.” (Yunus 10:62). Reported by Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, and the Musnad of Ahmad. Loving (each other) for the sake of Allah is a great matter, and I call you to bear witness that I love you all for the sake of Allah, just as I bear witness that you love me for the sake of Allah. Verily, Allah servants who will be under His Shade on a Day in which there is no shade but His! There are seven groups of people who will be under the Shade of His „Arsh on the Day of Judgment:

1.) A just leader.
2.) A youth who grew up in the obedience Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.
3.) A person whose heart is attached to the Masjid from the time he leaves it until he returns.
4.) A man who refuses the advancements of a beautiful woman (for illegal sexual intercourse), and says: 'I fear Allah'.
5.) A person who remembers Allah so much that he cries tears.
6.) A person who gives in charity and hides it, such that his left hand does not know what his right hand gives in charity.
7.) Two people who love each other for the sake of Allah, Glorious and Exalted is He!

(Hadith narrated by Abu Hurayra(RA) and reported in Sahih al-Bukhari vol.1, p.356, no.629 and Sahih Muslim vol.2, p.493, no.2248)

The easiest to attain and most meritorious is the last group.

Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) said, “A man is with whom he loves.” Ibn Jarir narrated that Sa`id bin Jubayr (RA) said, "An Ansari man came to the Messenger of Allah while feeling sad. The Prophet said to him, `Why do I see you sad?' He said, `O Messenger of Allah! I was contemplating about something.' The Prophet said, `What is it' The Ansari said, `We come to you day and night, looking at your face and sitting by you. Tomorrow, you will be raised in the company of the Prophets, and we will not be able to see you.' The Prophet did not say anything, until Jibril came to him with this Ayah, “And whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger then they will be in the company of those on whom Allah has bestowed His Grace, among the Prophets, the Truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous. How excellent these companions are!” and the Prophet sent the good news to the Ansari man.'' This Hadith was narrated in Mursal form from Masruq, `Ikrimah, `Amir Ash-Sha`bi, Qatadah and Ar-Rabi` bin Anas. This is the version with the best chain of narrators. In a Hadith collected in the Sahih and Musnad compilations, in Mutawatir form, narrated by several Companions that the Messenger of Allah(SAWS) was asked about the person who loves someone but his status is not close to theirs. He said, “A man is with whom he loves.” Anas commented, "We never rejoiced in Islam at anything more than when we heard the Messenger of Allah say, „A man is with whom he loves. Verily, I love the Messenger of Allah, Abu Bakr and `Umar, and I hope that Allah will resurrect me with them, even though I did not perform actions similar to theirs.'' All praise and thanks belongs to Allah because we love them all as well! We love men whom we are certain they are not from the inhabitants of the Hellfire! A man is with whom he loves! This is the hope we have for ourselves and for our beloveds.

Taqwa is the key to Paradise, which has been prepared for the Muttaqin! Taqwa is therefore the means to salvation from the Hellfire. “There is not one of you but will have to pass over it (Sirat over Hell); this is the Decree which must be accomplished. Then We shall save those who used to be consciously aware of Allah and were dutiful to Him.” (19:71-72).

Taqwa is the means to a praiseworthy end. “That Home of the Hereafter, We shall assign to those who rebel not against the Truth with prideful arrogance and make corruption in the earth. And the good end is for the Muttaqin.”(28:83).

Taqwa is the way out of difficulties and it is the key to provision and sustenance! “Whosoever is consciously aware of Allah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out from every difficulty, and He will provide him from (sources) he could never imagine. Whosoever puts his trust in Allah, then He will suffice him!”(65:3).

Taqwa is the key to ease and facilitation. “Whosoever is consciously aware of Allah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make his matter easy for him.”(65:4). Taqwa is the means to obtain the forgiveness of Allah. “Whosoever is consciously aware of Allah and keeps his duty to Him, He will expiate from him his sins, and will enlarge his reward.”(65:5). Taqwa is the means to obtain the Help of Allah. “But if you remain patient and have conscious awareness of Allah, not the least harm will their cunning do to you. Surely Allah surrounds all that they do.”(3:120).

ON THE THREE (3) “MEANS OF APPROACH” MENTIONED IN QURAN:

Everything which we are seeking in this life and the Hereafter is to be found in Taqwa! Therefore I advise myself and all of you to have the conscious awareness of Allah--in pubic and private.

Again Taqwa is to obey the commands and avoid the prohibitions of Allah--inwardly and outwardly. Allah Taala says, O you who believe! Have conscious awareness of Allah and keep your duty to Him, and seek the means of approach to Him.(5:35).

Therefore, if you are desiring to acquire Taqwa you must seek that which will connect you to its attainment, and there are three (3) Wasail mentioned in the Holy Quran:

1.) To follow the Messenger of Allah(SAWS) in all of his words and actions.
Surely, this is a means of approach” to Allah, Glorious and Exalted is He! “Say to mankind: „If you (really) love Allah then follow me, and Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”(3:31). The Messenger of Allah(SAWS) is saying that if you love Allah, then follow him! Whosoever follows the Messenger in his words and actions will obtain the love of Allah! Allah says in a Hadith Qudsi, “When I love him, I become him.” If Allah loves someone He will become his hearing, his seeing, his speaking, his hands and his feet! This is the beginning of Sainthood (Bidayat al-Wilaya) and this is the best “means of approach” (Wasila al-Wasila).

2.) The Holy Quran itself is the second means of approach.
The Remembrance of Allah, Glorious & Exalted is He, has no other aim and purpose besides the Countenance of Allah. “Keep yourself patiently with those who call on their Lord morning and evening, seeking His Face; and let not your eyes overlook them, desiring the pomp and glitter of the life of this world; and obey not him whose heart We have made heedless of Our Remembrance, and who follows his own lusts, and whose affair has been lost.” (18:28). In other words, imprison your egos (Ahbasa Nafsuka) along with those who remember Allah, morning and evening, and have no other purpose (in this) but seeking His Face, Glorious & Exalted is He! Surely, this is a “means of approach” which will connect the servant to Allah, Glorious & Exalted is He!

3.) Companionship with a Gnostic Saint („Arif Billah).
Allah says, “And follow the path of him who turns to Me in repentance and obedience.”(31:15). Whosoever turns to Allah in the totality of his spiritual states is to be considered an „Arif Billah, because there is nothing remaining of this person except Allah! So whosoever keeps the companionship of such a person will have found the “means of approach” which will connect you to Allah, Glorious & Exalted is He! The reality of “Existence” (Haqiqat al-Kawn) is (to be considered) everything other-than Allah; Existence and Man him-“self”, but Man desires union with Allah (al-Insan yurid al-Wusul ila Allah) although between him-“self” and Allah are veils (Hijab). The “veil” which is blocking man is (only) “Existence” itself! If a person persists in the Dhikr of Allah, Glorious & Exalted is He!, along with presence of heart, he will find “existence” vanishing from before him and he will attain union with Allah! He will find “existence” “…like a mirage in a desert. The thirsty one thinks it to be water until he comes up to it, he finds it to be nothing; but he finds Allah with him!”(24:39).

The “Greatest Shaykh” (Shaykh al-Akbar), Muhyideen ibn alArabi al-Hatimi(RA) has said: Whosoever has been enlightened to see existence (al-Kawn) as a mirage, has surely been elevated (to see) beyond the veil!” The Complete Shaykh (Shaykh al-Kamil) is the one who--when a disciple comes to him seeking union with Allah--the very first thing he orders is to engage in abundant Dhikr of Allah until he attains the Presence of Allah, according to the path of the annihilation of the ego (Tariqa al-Fana).

That is because unless the servant experiences the extinction of himself in the Essence of Allah, he will never obtain the perfection of faith! For as long as the veil remains, there also remains a type of punishment which will overtake the servant. “Nay! Surely, they will be veiled from seeing their Lord that Day. Then verily, they will indeed enter the burning flame of the Hellfire.”(83:15-16). So wherever there is the “veil”, there also is the punishment! But if (the disciple) persists in the Dhikr of Allah, he will become annihilated (to existence)!

ON THE THREE (3) TYPES OF SPIRITUAL ANNIHILATION (FANA):

1.) Annihilation in the Acts of Allah (Fana fil Afal).
2.) Annihilation in the Attributes of Allah (Fana fis Sifat).
3.) Annihilation in the Essence of Allah (Fana fil Dhat).

Many of the Believers have attained the station of annihilation in the Acts of Allah.
Whosoever knows that there is no Doer in existence except Allah, this is the one who is annihilated in the Acts of Allah. Indeed, many of the common believers have obtained this degree of annihilation.

I told my students, in one of the lessons on Arabic Grammar, that the grammarians say:

“The Doer in reality is Allah, even if He engenders the action metaphorically by means of an agent, for the One Who engenders the action is inseparable from the action performed.” That is because it all is Allah! The “Doer” in reality is Allah (al-Fail Haqiqatun) and the metaphorical agent (al-Fail Majazan) who (appears) to “do” the action, is also Allah! Whosoever knows that there is no “Doer” in existence except Allah has attained the annihilation in the Acts of Allah--in the Presence of the Acts of Allah (Fi Hadrat al-Afal)-- and this person has found some of the true Faith (which is required).
If the person attains the station of annihilation in the Attributes (Fana fis Siffat), he has indeed ascended to a higher station. The Attributes of Allah are well-known to all of us, as we have studied the books of Tawhid which begin by enumerating His (Essential) Attributes:

1.) Power (Qudrat)
2.) Will (Irada)
3.) Knowledge („Ilm)
4.) Life (Hayat)
5.) Hearing (Samia)
6.) Seeing (Basar)
7.) Speech (Kalam)

When we have assigned each of these (Essential) Attributes of Allah to Him Alone, we have attained to the station of annihilation in the Attributes of Allah. The „Ulama have settled for us in our elementary teaching that there is no power, will, knowledge, life, hearing, seeing, or speech except that of Allah! Therefore, whosoever attains (the real knowledge of this) has arrived to the station of Fana fis Sifat!

If someone persists onward in Tarqiyya and is elevated beyond this, he will attain to the station of annihilation in the Essence of Allah (Fana fil Dhat).

ON THE TRUE MEANING OF TAWHID & THE THREE (3) DEGREES OF SHAHADA:

When someone attains the station of annihilation in the Essence of Allah everything will vanish from him, until nothing remains except Allah! The tongue of the one in this state (Lisan al-Hal) will say, “Nothing remains except Allah, nothing besides Him! There is not in this place any attachment or intelligibility!” In this state is found the real meaning of La ilaha il Allah! This „Word of Oneness (Kalima at-Tawhid) has a shell (Qishr) and a core (Lub) and the core of the core (Lub al-Lub)! The “shell”, or general Oneness (Tawhid al-„Amm), has come in the Holy Quran as: Allah! There is no god but He.(2:255), and this, in truth, describes those who are absent (Ghaba) from Allah, Glorious & Exalted is He! They are absent from Him, while He is never absent from them! If a person continues traveling in Allah (Sayr) and makes Him their sole aim & purpose, they will arrive to the station of presence with Allah (Hudur maa Allah) and will begin to address Him in the way He is addressed during the Salat: “You we worship and You we ask for help! Lead us to the Straight Path!”(1:5-6). He has thus come to the station of “La ilaha ila Anta” and this has also come in the Holy Qur„an as: “There is no god but You.” (21:87). If you complete the journey and attain the station of annihilation in the Essence of Allah, you will find the only remaining Dhikr is “La ilaha ila Ana” and this has also come in the Holy Quran as: There is no god but Me!”(20:14).

A person might find it strange to hear his brother saying “There is no god but Me!” and may assume this person to be ascribing Divinity to himself, while the truth is that the Real has spoken upon his tongue! He hears this Divine Speech just as his brother does, but it is only the Speech of Allah! Allah spoke like this to Prophet Musa (AS)--on the tongue of a bush! “And when he came to it (the burning bush), he was called by name: „O Musa! Verily, I am your Lord! So take off your shoes, you are in the Sacred Valley, Tuwa. I have chosen you, so listen to that which will be revealed (to you). Verily, I am Allah! There is no god but Me, so worship Me and perform Salat for My Remembrance! (20:11-14). If Allah is Able to speak on the tongue of a bush and say, “There is no god but Me!”, surely He is Able to speak on the tongue of a human being and say, “Verily, I am Allah!” If a person attains the station of annihilation in the Essence of Allah they will surely know that there is nothing except Allah! This is the Pure Oneness (Tawhid al-Khalis) which is sought by the Sufi people. Shaykh Ahmad al-Tijani(RA) is recorded as saying in Jawahir al-Maani: The reality of Oneness (Haqiqat Tawhid) you have not comprehended as long as you say Existence and „Allah!

Where is the Oneness if you affirm two? There is no Tawhid until you have established absolute Oneness for Allah, by Allah, and to Allah! Until the servant finds no entrance and no exit, and this is not possible except by traveling the Path of Annihilation (Tariq al-Fana). That is why the first thing which the Arifin encourage their disciples to seek is this annihilation in Allah, Glorious & Exalted is He!

After this annihilation (in Allah) they continue to elevate the Murid until he attains the (annihilation) in the Shaykh, as he is an Attribute of Allah. What is desired from these two annihilations (in Allah & in the Shaykh) is that the servant will soon come to the station where he will meet with the Messenger of Allah(SAWS) and the Shaykh(RA), and will know nothing else after this Gnosis! If a disciple continues to advance in their Tarqiyya they will come to have Direct Witnessing of the „nonexistence of things. An example of this nonexistence of things is seen in the cinema and movies we watch.

ON CINEMA AND FILM BEING AN EXAMPLE OF THE NON-EXISTENCE OF THINGS:

The Arifin love that everyone should watch a movie at least one time (in your life) to witness something (of Reality) and to gain certainty that this world is also non-existent! For example, you see in the cinema what you believe to be „real, while in truth you know it does not exist! The entirety of existence is just like a movie, for you think you are seeing what is real and that you are doing acts of goodness or avoiding acts of sin, but the truth of the matter is that Allah--Al-Wahid--is the only “Doer”! After this realization, the heart of a Murid continues to elevate in the Presence of Allah, to the point where whatever they see--either in the state of wakefulness or sleep--is understood to be (a manifestation of) Allah! They come to know with certainty that the only Exitent Being is Allah, Glorious & Exalted is He! They experience this Direct Witnessing without remaining in the station annihilation or while being spiritually intoxicated, but with the perfection of wakefulness (Kamil al-Yaqazatan)! They come to know the reality of things and give to everything its correct and due rank and position. They know not to esteem something beyond its right, nor to belittle something less than its due. They follow after goodness with the totality of their actions! They pray, fast, give charity out of their wealth, and perform the pilgrimage--all with the correct Adab of (Direct Witnessing) of Allah--knowing that He is the only “Doer”! If a servant attains to this degree, they have become linked to Allah with a real connection, and they will do everything by Allah, for Allah, and in Allah! If a servant does not travel this path of annihilation, perhaps they may do something good believing themselves to be the „doer, and having an aim and purpose other than the Face of Allah! Or perhaps they will avoid doing wrong for fear of being humiliated, and neither of these two states is real worship. Therefore, a servant has the absolute need to have a real connection to Allah, Glorious & Exlated is He!, to certify that the entirety of his/her actions--both the acts of obedience and avoidance--are completely for the sake of Allah! This is what is meant in the Holy Quran when Allah says, They were only commanded to sincerely worship Allah, and abstain from ascribing partners to Him, and to perform Salat and give Zakat, and verily, this is the right Deen.”(98:5). Allah has commanded us to His worship--with the prerequisite condition of sincerity! Al-Ikhlas is to remove all partners in your service to the Real, and your ego is among the partners & idols! Therefore, remove your „self from the totality of your actions, and then do everything by Allah, for Allah, and in Allah! The Holy Quran is saying, “You (Alone) we worship and
You (Alone) we ask for help! Lead us to the Straight Path!”(1:5-6). The Maqam of “Iyyaka Nabudu is the station of the common believer (al-Amm); while the Maqam of Wa Iyyaka Nastain is the station of the spiritually elite (al-Khass). The Maqam of the Khas al-Khass is to say nothing at all!

ON SALAT BEING THE STRONGEST BOND OF CONNECTION BETWEEN THE SERVANT AND ALLAH:

Salat is the strongest bond of connection between the servant and Allah, Glorious & Exalted is He! I therefore advise each of you to reflect deeply while performing the Salat! Everything about the Salat is worship and a means of drawing close to Allah. Most of the Quranic recitation is sending perpetual praises unto the Most High, and the remainder is for your deep reflection and humilty before Allah--in both your moments of rest and movements (throughout the various positions of Salat). Allah says in the Holy Quran, We have not created the Jinn or Mankind except to worship Me.(51:56), meaning We have created them with no other purpose other than to know Me! Ibn Abbas(RA) said that “to worship Me” means “to know Me”, because the actions of someone who does not know Allah cannot rightfully be called worship (Ibada).
A person who does not know Allah cannot rightfully be called a human being! “They are like cattle, or even more astray.” Allah has created the Jinn and Mankind and has abundantly bestowed His Blessings upon them--outwardly and inwardly--from the beginning of creation until this time of ours, and has been benevolent towards them by sending Prophets & Messengers who called them to Allah. When He sealed prophethood (Nubuwwa), He made the „Ulama to become the inheritors of the Prophets and they became the callers to Allah. Indeed, each one of them have guided the creation to Allah. Whosoever calls you to Allah has given good advice, but he who calls you to the Dunya has betrayed you, and whosoever calls you to work, has only fatigued you. The one who has really given you good advice is the one who calls you to Allah!

The Shaykh to be followed is the one who calls you to Allah--by both his words and his deeds--and his spiritual state raises your Himma when you see him. When he speaks, his words benefit you in the Presence of Allah, because he speaks with wisdom! Allah says, “And only a little of knowledge has been given to you.”(17:85); and “And he to whom wisdom is granted has received abundant good.”(2:269). So, very little knowledge has been granted, but wisdom is an abundant good! True wisdom is that which is received from Allah without any intermediary--and it is granted to the heart of someone, who although is not a Prophet, has received direct from the Lord, Glorious & Exalted is He! It is the wisdom of Allah which has been cast directly into the heart of the servant and it only passes through the mouth of the speaker, and he is the first to benefit from such wisdom! The wisdom of Allah is such that it penetrates into the hearts of people, while the words which only come from people themselves does not reach beyond the ears of the listeners! They only pass pronouncements that do not arrive to the heart and few who listen to them find any benefit in the speech of such people. In fact, if the speaker is profuse with such „egoistic talking it will only harden his heart and the hearts of the listeners, and this is not what is meant by wisdom. Although prophethood has ended, Allah has been abundantly kind to allow the enduring presence of their inheritors--the right acting scholars--who have each guided the servants to establish a connection to their Lord and have fortified them in the knowledge that Allah shall inherit the Earth and whatsoever is on it! Allah has joined us together on this auspicious occasion and in this blessed land and we ask Allah to increase it in its sanctity. The wisdom of Allah has declared that everything which is done without the goal of benefit is to wear the robe of playing and frivolity, and the actions of Allah are always done without frivolity! He says, “Did you think that We had created you in play and without any purpose and that you would not be brought back to Us?”(23:115). This is addressed to the „Arifin--those who have the Direct Witnessing of the actions of Allah--those who know there is a goal of benefit in every action of Allah. The supreme objective of Allah is to benefit others in all that He does, and everything which is not done with that aim and purpose is described as playing and without purpose. This is why the doctor is called “Hakim”, because everything which he does is for the benefit of his patients and not himself. My speaking on the Creator in one sentence and on the creation in the next (moving between Jami and Tafriq) is only to draw your attention to the mutual benefit that we are to seek in all of our gatherings and for us to understand the Supreme Wisdom of Allah--that absolutely nothing is done is vain! We are hopeful that Allah will enable us to obtain mutual benefit in our meeting together, both in this life and in the Hereafter. We have learned that whenever Allah desires to give increase to something, he multiplies the cause of that thing! If He multiplies the cause, then indeed, He increases the effect!

ON CAUSE AND EFFECT:

We have seen two (2) examples in this Dunya that lead us to bear witness to the statement if the cause is multiplied, then the effect too, is multiplied.
The first example is the (general) cause of provision (Asbab ar-Rizq) in the life of this world. Everyone who works will find that it is the cause of his finding sustenance, and everyone who doesnt will find that to be the cause of his not finding sustenance. Man shall only obtain what he strives for. It is for this reason that you find lots of sustenance in the Dunya.

The second example are the many causes for death. One person dies because of this cause and another person expires due to that cause. There are no end to the different causes of death and therefore, we see the many different kinds of death occurring. We always hear about someone dying from this and that (until) we ourselves will eventually die because of some cause. Forgiveness of sins also has many different causes and we are hopeful that we avail ourselves of each and everyone of them! Dhikr of Allah is one such cause; sitting with the righteous people is another; joining the gatherings of remembrance and admonition is another. Sitting in one righteous gathering is enough to cause the expiation of a thousand sinful gatherings!

We ask that Allah enable us to move between Jami and Tafriq (Gatheredness in the Creator and separation as creation). May He enable some of us to be the cause of others obtaining His forgiveness, and may He continue to give benefit to some on account of others!

ON OBSERVING ALLAH IN EVERYTHING (MURAQABA):

We advise each of you again--just as we began this speech--to have conscious awareness (Taqwa) of Allah, in private and in public, and to observe Allah with each breath (Muraqabatuhu maa Anfas)! The possession of these two (2) traits will enable you to benefit from everything heard in this gathering and everything you hear from the people of goodness (Ahl al-Khayr)--as they did not achieve any goodness except by means of Taqwa and Muraqaba. Again, Taqwa is to obey the commands and to avoid the prohibitions of Allah, outwardly and inwardly! Muraqaba is the state of observing Allah in everything and this will eternally connect you to Allah until you achieve the spiritual state described by the Messenger of Allah(SAWS) when he said, “Al-Ihsan is to worship Allah as if you are seeing Him, and if you cannot achieve this state is to be aware that He is seeing you!” You must worship Allah until you are seeing His Beauty and Majesty (in everything), or until you are aware that He is seeing you! If you are unable to achieve this state, then you must at least become aware that He is absolutely familiar with the entirety of your „self and that He is a constant Watcher over you!

This is the minor degree of Muraqaba, and in each degree there is good! Whether you worship Him with observation or you attain the awareness that He is always watching you--in each degree there is good! You can ascertain your own level of development of these 2 traits of Taqwa & Muraqaba by imagining if a person whom you greatly esteem was present while you thought to do an act of disobedience and you feel a sense of shame to go through with the action. Allahu-Akbar! Allah is indeed greater than that person and you should feel a greater sense of shame to commit a bad action in His Presence! There was a story reported about a righteous woman who said that a wicked man burst into her home and demanded to sleep with her. She said, “Ok, on account that you close every window and door in the house so that no one will be able to see.” So the man rushed to close every window and door, but the pious lady told him, “There is one door which you did not close.” The man said, “What door is that?” She told him, “The remaining door is the one between us and Allah and as long as He is watching, I shall never sleep with you!” Allah says, “And whatever work you are engaged in or whatever portion of the Quran you recite, and whatever actions the people are doing, We are Witness thereof when you are doing it. And nothing is hidden from your Lord (so much as) the weight of an atom on the earth or in the heavens. Nor what is less than that or what is greater than that, except it is in a Clear Record.” (10:61).

ON ALLAH BEING WITH US BY HIS ESSENCE OR BY HIS KNOWLEDGE:

I once had a conversation with a Faqih (scholar of exoteric knowledge) and he said to me: “Your Shaykh Ahmad al-Tijani has said that Allah is with us by His Essence and this is not possible!” I said to him, “If Allah is not with us by His Essence, then in what way is He with us?” He replied, “Allah is only with us by the power of His Knowledge.” I said, “Yes, He is with us by the power of His Knowledge and with His Essence! Where is it that He can „go and His Essence not be there as well? You and I cannot go somewhere and our essential selves be absent, so how much more so for Allah! According to the beliefs of the Fuqaha, it is impossible for Allah to move from „place-to-place , or for His Essence to remain in one place while His Attribute of Knowledge move somewhere else. You and the Fuqaha have (rightly) exalted Allah above „space and time, and say that it is not befitting of the Exalted Essence to be in the location of filth and dirt. So you have exalted Him (Tanzihi) above being in places such as the Hellfire on the one hand, but you have made Him incomplete and incapable (of being with His creation by His Essence) at the same time! By saying that He is only with us by His Knowledge and not His Essence you have attempted to limit and restrict Him, when this is impossible for Him! He is with each person by His Essence & His Knowledge-- either in the West or in the East, in heaven or on earth--and this is a delicate and critical point to be properly understood.” The man said to me, “You have rectified my Faith for me!” and I said, “The Messenger of Allah(SAWS) is also with each person by his essence!” and the man replied, “This is an even more amazing thing which you have now said!” I asked him, “Do you perform Salat?” and he said, “Yes.” I asked him, “Do you recite the Tashahud?” and he said, “Yes.” I asked him, “Do you say that „all greetings are for Allah, all acts of worship and good deeds are for Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet of Allah and the mercy and blessings of Allah.? The man replied in the affirmative, so I asked him, Do the Arabs speak with the personal pronoun „youexcept if a person is present? He said, “No. Are you saying that the Prophet is with every person who is praying--either in the East or the West?” I said, “Yes, havent you read the Hadith which is reported by Imam al-Bukhari which is narrated by Asma, who said, “I came to 'Aisha while she was praying, and said to her, "What has happened to the people?" She pointed out towards the sky at the eclipse and I looked towards the Masjid and saw the people offering the prayer. 'Aisha said, "Subhan Allah!" I said to her, "Is there a sign?" She nodded with her head meaning, "Yes." I, too, then stood (for the prayer of eclipse) until I became (nearly) unconscious and later on I poured water on my head. After the prayer, the Prophet praised and glorified Allah and then said, "Just now at this place I have seen what I have never seen before, including Paradise and Hell. No doubt it has been inspired to me that you will be put to trials in your graves and these trials will be like the trials of Masiih ad-Dajjal or nearly like it (the sub narrator is not sure which expression Asma' used). Two angels will come to him and make him sit up and he will be asked, 'What do you know about this man (Prophet Muhammad)?' Then the faithful believer will reply, 'He is Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, who had come to us with clear proof and guidance and so we accepted his teachings and followed him. He is Muhammad.' And he will repeat it three times. Then the angels will say to him, 'Sleep in peace as we have come to know that you were a faithful believer.' On the other hand, a hypocrite or a doubtful person will reply, 'I do not know, but I heard the people saying so-and-so and so I said the same.' (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 2/422; Sahih Muslim, Musnad Ahmad, Sunan Abu Daud, an-Nasai)

I said, There are sometimes millions of people who die in a single moment and the Messenger of Allah is present with each of them in his grave, as the two angels will question each of the deceased about the Prophet and he is there present with each of them in his respective grave!” The man said, “You are correct.” Allah says, “Then why do you not intervene when (the soul of a dying person) reaches the throat? And you are at that moment looking on, but We are nearer to him than you, but you do not see.”(56:83-85); “Then surely We shall question those to whom the (Book) was sent and verily,We shall question the Messengers. Surely We shall narrate to them (their whole story) with knowledge, for We were never absent.”(7:6-7); “It is He Who created the heavens and the earth in six Days and then rose over the Throne. He knows what goes into the earth and what comes forth from it, and what descends from the heaven and what ascends thereto. And He is with you wherever you may be, and He is the All-Seer of what you do.”(57:4). So Allah is with everyone by His Essence & Knowledge and we should observe Him in the totality of our actions, words, spiritual states, and intentions. He is absolutely aware of our each and every move and there is nothing which is absent from Him, Glorious & Exalted is He!

ON THE REALITY OF THE DEEN AND IMPORTANCE OF SALAT:

The Deen of Al-Islam is Shahada, Salat, Sawm, Zakat, and Hajj. Zakat and Hajj are not made obligatory except on the one who is financially able to perform them. As for Salat and Fasting, they are two obligations upon every Mukalif--male or female, free or slave--until death comes to them. It is not permissible to ever abandon these two pillars, so I advise each of you to hold to Salat! In this stressful and hectic time of ours, we see that many of the youth who claim to be Muslim are abandoning Salat. Salat is such an important pillar of the Deen, that whosoever leaves it, has left the Deen altogether! Allah has commanded us to establish Salat, to perform it in congregation, in its correct time, with humility and reverence.  In Surah al-Muminun, He has mentioned that those who establish the Salat according to these conditions “…these are indeed the inheritors, who shall inherit the Firdaus (Paradise) and they shall dwell therein forever.”(23:9-11). Allah has also mentioned the fate of those refrain from performing Salat. He mentions Abu Jahl and those who follow him in abandoning Salat. He says in Surah al-Qiyamah, “So he neither believed nor prayed!”(75:31). Then He mentioned their awaited fate when they are asked, “What has caused you to enter the Hellfire? They will say: „We were not of those who used to offer Salat.”(74:42-43). Therefore, we know that those who abandon Salat are destined to be the people of the Hellfire, just as we know that those who establish its performance, along with its prerequisite conditions, are destined to be the people of Jannat al-Firdaus, InshaAllah. The Messenger of Allah(SAWS) was once asked by one of his Companions, who desired to be his neighbor in Paradise, how can he guarantee that for him? He replied, “with plenty prostrations!” In other words, the Prophet told him the gaurantee of that was the performance of plenty Salat! The Messenger of Allah(SAWS) has nothing to do with a “Shaykh” who allows their followers to abandon Salat and yet promises them Paradise! The Prophet himself was unable to guarantee that for his own Companions! He guided his Companions and his followers to that which Allah Himself commanded. The forbade them with what Allah Himself prohibited. Whosoever follows his example and does what he commands and avoids what he forbids, he is the one who will be with him in Paradise! The Messenger of Allah(SAWS) told his daughter, “O Fatima, daughter of Muhammad! I have nothing which can avail you against Allah! You may ask me what you want of my worldly belongings.” The Prophet showed mankind the way of true guidance, according to his capacity to direct them to the path of guidance. The Guide in the real sense is only Allah, and the Messenger of Allah, or a Scholar, or a Shaykh can only show you the way, but guidance is only from Allah! A Shaykh can only show a Murid the way, but the disciple must follow the example which has been set.

THE TARIQA TIJANIYYA IS THE PATH OF THE PROPHET(SAWS):

Our Tariqa Tijaniyya is clearly established upon well-known pillars just as our Deen is clearly established upon well-known pillars, such as Salat & Sawm. The Tariqa is established upon the 3 pillars of al-Istighfar, Salat „ala Nabi(SAWS) and “La ilaha il Allah”. Many people in this present time of the astonishing decline of the Muslims are being deceived into abandoning Salat and Fasting and we are witnessing many others denying the Sufi leaders and their Turuq. The Sufi orders are only the Path of the Prophet(SAWS), they do not belong to Shaykh Abdul-Qadir al-Jilani(RA) or to Shaykh Ahmad al-Tijani(RA). The Tariqa is nothing but the adoption of the Way of the Prophet(SAWS) and it is this which people are summoned to. The Sufi orders are given to cause benefit to humanity, by seeking the forgiveness of Allah, offering prayers and salutations upon the Prophet, and delving deep into the meaning of “La ilaha il Allah”.

Each of these 3 pillars can be found in numerous places in the Holy Quran.

A (Wahabi/Salafi) scholar in Mecca once advised me to order my followers to abandon the Tariqa Tijaniyya because it is innovation (Bida), superstition (Kharafat), and disbelief (Kufr). He said that I, as a scholar, should return to Senegal and do the work of getting people to leave the Tariqa Tijaniyya. I aked him to continue with speaking his thoughts on the subject and when he finished talking, I asked him, “What is the Tariqa Tijaniyya?” He said, “I do not know.” I told him that is a good answer, but I know what the Tariqa Tijaniyya and Shaykh Ahmad al-Tijani(RA) is all about! I said, “Since you do not know anything about either the Shaykh nor his Tariqa, should you tell me about this or should I be informing you?” He said, “You are correct, the one who knows should be in the position of teaching.” I told him, “I asked you what is the Tariqa Tijaniyya and you replied that you know nothing about the subject, therefore I will tell you that the Tariqa Tijaniyya is only al-Istighfar, Salat „ala Nabi, and “La ilaha il Allah”. “Is it possible for you to advise your Muslim brother to stop seeking the forgiveness of Allah and Allah says, “Ask forgiveness from your Lord, verily, He is the Oft-Forgiving.”(71:10)? He said, “No.” I then asked him, “Are any of us infallible? The Prophet was Masum and had his past and future sins forgiven by Allah (48:1-2) and yet he continued to seek the forgiveness of Allah more than seventy times a day; and in another narration, he sought forgiveness more than one hundred times a day. So, if the infallible Prophet(SAWS) is seeking the forgiveness of Allah, what about you & I, can we afford to abandon making Istighfar?” The man answered, “No.” I then began to explain the importance of Salat „ala Nabi by saying, “Allah orders the believers to send prayers and salutations upon him in His Saying, “O you who believe! Send your Salat on him, and greet him with a salutation of peace!”(33:56), and the Prophet himself said, “Whosoever offers one Salat on me, Allah will offer ten Salat upon him.”; is it possible for you to advise your Muslim brothers to abandon sending Salat upon the Prophet(SAWS)?” He said,“No.” I then asked him, “Is it possible for you to advise your Muslim brothers to stop saying „La ilaha il Allah? He answered,No. I then said to him, “This is the Tariqa Tijaniyya: to offer al-Istighfar, Salat „ala Nabi, and „La ilaha il Allah, morning and evening. If this is an innovation, it is a Bida which has come in the Holy Quran and the Hadith! We begin our Wird al-Lazim by first saying, “I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Devil” and the recitation of Surah al-Fatiha. Allah says, “So recite from the Quran as much as may be easy for you.(73:20); then we make al-Istighfar and Allah says, Ask forgiveness from your Lord, verily, He is the Oft-Forgiving.”(71:10); then we make Salat „ala Nabi and Allah says, “O you who believe! Send your Salat on him, and greet him with a salutation of peace!”(33:56); then we say “La ilaha il Allah” and Allah says, “Remember Allah with much remembrance!”(33:41); and we do this morning and evening, as Allah says, “And glorify His Praises morning and evening!”(33:42); and “In houses which Allah has ordered to be raised, in them His Name is remembered. Therein glorify Him in the mornings and the evenings. Men whom neither trade nor sale (business) diverts them from the remembrance of Allah, nor from performing Salat nor from giving Zakat. They fear a Day when hearts and eyes will be overturned (out of the horror of the torment of the Day of Judgment.”(24:36-37). I asked the man, “Is it possible for you to order us to abandon these three (3) pillars of the Tariqa Tijaniyya?” He said, “No, but you should write a book to clearly explain what the Tariqa Tijaniyya is and how it is safe and sound and so that we can distinguish between what is the truth from the lies.” I told him, “Yes, the Tariqa Tijaniyya is only al-Istighfar, Salat „ala Nabi, and “La ilaha il Allah.” As I mentioned earlier in this sermon, “There is no god but Allah” has different levels of meaning. It has a shell, a core and the core of the core! To the common believers, “La ilaha il Allah” means that there is none worthy of worship besides Allah (Laa Ma„bud bi„l Haqq Siwahu). To those with a higher level of understanding, “La ilaha il Allah” means that there is no desired objective besides Allah (Laa Maqsud bil Haqq il Allah). To those with an even higher comprehension of La ilaha il Allah means that there is nothing in existence but Allah (Laa Mawjud bil Haqq il Allah). The 1st degree belongs to those who say “La ilaha il Huwa”. The 2nd degree belongs to those who say “La ilaha ila Anta” The 3rd degree belongs to those who say “La ilaha il Ana”

As we stated before, the third degree is for those whose remembrance is “Allah!” “Allah!” The remembrance of Allah is the Key to Sainthood (Miftah al-Wilaya), it is also the Beginning and End of Sainthood (Bidayat wal Nihayat al-Wilaya), and it is also the End and the Begininng of Sainthood. If the beginning is sound, then the ending is also sound. We begin by saying “La ilaha il Allah” and then we move onto “La ilaha il Anta” and then we move onto “La ilaha il Ana”! To Allah is the return! La ilaha il Allah!! I am giving thanks and praises to Allah for the blessing of us having attained to love of each other for the sake of Allah, Glorious & Exalyed is He! I am asking Allah to reward each of you with a great reward! I am asking Him to increase your good, in both this life and the Hereafter! I am asking Allah to increase all of you in wealth and in offspring, and to place tremendous Baraka in these blessings! May Allah bless the land of Mauritania in general and to protect it from every evil, epidemic, plague and disease! I ask that Allah make us to be included among the most distinguished companions of Shaykh Ahmad al-Tijani(RA)--in this life and in the Hereafter! He is Able to do this and this is not difficult for Him! Oh Allah, send peace and blessings upon our master Muhammad, the Opener of what had been closed, the Seal of what had gone before; the Helper of the Truth by the Truth, and the Guide to Your Straight Path--may Allah's blessings be upon him and upon his Family, and may this prayer be according to his real grandeur and surely his position is extremely great! As-Salaamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullah wa Baraktuh!
